The Best Marathon in the World

Runners are determined people. They also happen to be some of the most fitness-minded people on the planet. Last month we covered the ways in which Tamarindo is establishing itself as the “Fitness Capital” of Costa Rica. Now we’ll throw another log on the fire, to further prove it.

This year marks the seventh time people will come to beautiful Tamarindo, and get up before the roosters, to run the Tamarindo Marathon. This year’s race should be the biggest and best one yet, marked by an expected record number of participants, awards, and prizes.

On race day, the 20th of September, expect Tamarindo to be packed. Preparation for this even started months ago, when the municipality of Santa Cruz grated the old 4-wheel trail that exited the back side of town. That trail is now an even dirt road, wide enough for two cars, and properly drained. It’s drivable even by car.

Prior to this, Tamarindo was in a tight spot for emergencies with only one road in. Especially when that road was full of race participants. Now, with a backdoor, traffic can easily flow in and out.

Good thing too. The town will see many people, and from every corner of the world. Appropriate, considering Tamarindo’s other reputation as an international meeting place. Case in point, last year’s winner was Kenyan.

Speaking of diverse and unique, this will mark the first time organizers will have the option of a new track. The newly paved highway between the towns of Villa Real and 27 de Abril is anticipated to be part of the route. How they will use the road, as of this writing, is unknown. Maps have not been released yet, but we know where they will start.

On race-day there will be one large group leaving the center of town at 5:00 am. (The 30-kilometer leg leaves at 5:30) As they progress they will break off into packs. One will be the full marathon group, running 42 kilometers, and then there will be four other groups: 30, 21, 10, and 5-kilometer runners.

Participants generally stay in one of the local hotels, but we think Tamarindo vacation rental options are the superior choice. Less crowds, better rates, and more deluxe accommodations make for a better night’s rest. Better rest, means a better race. Plus most of the hotel rooms have already been booked. Runners do not have to stay at the Diria to receive the pasta-dinner, included with their registration-fee.

Registration also includes an Adidas-branded shirt, a medal, hydration, insurance and electronic timing. If you are running you may register near San Jose at Runners Pavas, Runners Curridabat, Runners Heredia, Homeless Runners, 26.2 Endurance, Athletic Corner, Sports Tibas, Miguel Foticos, and bank branches LAFISE. Otherwise you can register on the marathon site.

This would be a good time to run, not walk, to your nearest Horizon Pacific property manager, and book a room. Even if you don’t plan to race. Come check out all the international celebration and excitement of the Tamarindo fitness scene. Come stay in the fitness capital of Costa Rica, in a Costa Rica vacation rental.
